The SCCS Youth Development Program The Goal SCCS Youth Development Program is to create a partnership of youth and adults discovering fun, healthy opportunities for personal growth, hands-on leadership experience and rewarding community participation. The Program provides a safe, caring and supportive context for young people to develop their own programs and "learn by doing" how to govern, manage and operate a community-based non-profit organization. The Core Principles that guide the Program are:
The Program consist of Six Key Components: Introduction to Youth Development provides an age appropriate introduction to youth development principles for children ages 9 to 12. Youth Leadership enables young people to take on significant leadership roles within SCCS such as membership on the Board of Directors or serving as the Youth Executive Director or Youth Thrift Shop Manager. Youth-led Program Development gives youth the opportunity to "learn-by doing" how to develop and implement programs in a a community-based non-profit organization. Youth Employment employs youth in the SCCS administrative office, thrift shop and programs, Working for SCCS provides provides opportunities to develop important life and job skills and encourages the assumption of increasing responsibility and leadership within the organization. Youth and Government sends delegations to the YMCA's Model Legislature and Court and Model UN. Teen delegates write bills, attend state-wide conferences and build new friendships across the state that bridge socio-economic, ethnic and geographic boundaries. Fun -- the simple joy of living and sharing -- is an integral part of all SCCS activities. An attitude of fun creates an environment where supportive relationships can develop and people can feel safe to explore and make mistakes. Fun is also a vital, though sometimes overlooked, component of physical and mental health. Whether it’s sitting on a planning committee or going whitewater rafting, fun is always core value at SCCS. |
